Concept

A Dialogue Between Past and Present.

The design preserves the historic identity of the original structure while introducing a distinct modern addition, creating a layered architectural narrative that reflects both continuity and change.

Rather than a simple renovation, the project explores how new spatial experiences can emerge within an existing urban fabric.

Historic Preservation

The original townhouse façade is carefully restored, maintaining its proportions, materiality, and architectural rhythm.

The entry sequence is reconfigured to align with the traditional parlor-level organization, reinforcing the typology of classic New York residential design.

Contemporary Addition

A 1.5-story vertical extension introduces new living spaces, including a penthouse suite, private study, and rooftop terrace.

This addition is conceived as a distinct yet complementary layer — clearly contemporary, yet integrated with the existing structure.

Light & Material

A perforated brick façade defines the new extension, acting as both a privacy screen and a light-filtering device.

Large arched openings and patterned brickwork allow natural light to enter while creating a dynamic interplay of shadow and depth throughout the day.

Spatial Language

Curvilinear forms are introduced across both interior and exterior elements, softening the rigid geometry of the traditional townhouse.

These gestures enhance spatial flow and introduce a sense of movement, contrasting yet complementing the original structure.

Living Experience

The project is designed around the idea of layered living.

Interior and exterior spaces are seamlessly connected, culminating in a private rooftop environment that offers openness, light, and retreat within the city.

The result is a home that balances density with calm — a contemporary interpretation of townhouse living.
